Spirited Science: Musings Of a Botanist on Our Evolving Understandings of Life

At its heart, I believe science is driven by humanity’s collective wonder and desire to better understand the world’s many mysteries and marvels.

Throughout history, however, there have been numerous biases and barriers to learning and success in our scientific community. This has limited the inclusion of underrepresented groups, and science remains largely inaccessible to many, still today.

In a world of fake news and other dire societal and environmental problems, I believe science and research provide important and necessary tools and resources for addressing the challenges we face. As both a scientist and fellow community member of Earth, I ask myself daily, with all of my privileges and understandings, what can I do to help create a better place for us all to live, learn, and grow in.

Purpose:

This undertaking - albeit small in the scope of what all is unfolding - is an effort to create a platform that facilitates the sharing of knowledge, lessons, and inspirations that can be taken from science and nature, in order to help build community, connection, and empowerment. I seek to support creative storytelling in STEM, find common ground across intersecting journeys, further develop the ability to communicate effectively and facilitate deeper conversations, as well as cultivate greater awareness and appreciation for process, challenges, and achievements.

These posts are written in hopes of engaging people of all ages, backgrounds, and career paths, and I dearly welcome all comments, suggestions, and questions to further support connection and comprehension.

Most simply put, these are love letters to the universe, to you. I hope they reach you and are of some service.

Sincerely yours,

Edi
